Trouble with happiness is you can’t be happy about it

When you think of happiness you jump into a self-analysis, whether you are happy or not…
My close friend Umang Thakkar is a billionaire and once I asked him, “Are you happy in life?”

His answer was: “I never thought of it .I just live. To be honest, where is the time to think that I am happy or not…..Happiness is a simple path and you make it complicated and people around you create confusion about happiness. Happiness could be found in silence. Happiness could be found in speaking also. “

I like it. Even, while reviewing your happiness in the next 60 seconds, you might lose your happiness.

Most of the time, the person next to you or your neighbour or colleague makes you unhappy. The unhappiness is only by comparison though you don’t realize it. You compare or your family members compare this emotional motif and trouble starts in life.

Happiness is not a commodity which could be bought from the market. Nor a product sold in any departmental store or shopping mall. Life is gifted to all of us for living and leading a normal life not to hanker for an esoteric happiness…

There is a nice Chinese proverb which says, If you want happiness for an hour — take a nap; If you want happiness for a day — go fishing; If you want happiness for a year — inherit a fortune; and If you want happiness for a lifetime — help someone else.

Saints like Mother Teresa indeed found happiness not by helping themselves, but helping others. How true that in seeking and providing happiness for others, you find it for yourself!
To understand the true spirit of happiness we must shed our selfishness. You can be happy only if the man next to you is happy. Can you, for instance, be happy if the passenger sitting next to you in a bus is suffering from cold? You would feel that you too are unwell. Imagine you give a cold tablet and the man’s cold vanishes and he is happy. Wouldn’t it reflect immediately on your face too? Happiness is never a one-way street. It is a give and take. You can’t simply take happiness for the asking. To be happy you need to do something that creates happiness for others.

Let us recognize that all God’s creations want to cherish the gift of happiness and nothing in this universe wants to suffer. Then how do you justify the pursuit of your own happiness for selfish ends? Isn’t it both morally wrong in being oblivious to the feelings and suffering of others around you who you would admit belong to the same human family? The more you give happiness the more you get. But thinking that happiness is an end in itself is palpably wrong. Like 24-carat gold is never strong and preferable unless a little amount of copper is added; so too being happy needs an element of unhappiness. Imagine a lifetime of happiness? Or lifetime of sunlight without an element of darkness; or a lifetime of winter without sunshine. No man could bear it: it would be hell on earth. When things change happiness too changes.

Indeed happiness is not directly connected to the possession of money alone. You can find it even on the face of a beggar; a poor person who sleeps on the cart in a wintry night on the footpath. Happiness therefore has more to do with your internal self rather than with external ramifications that create a false sense of it. Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing is good to others, you will be successful.

It is rightly said that happiness is not eternal. It changes according to the mood. Living a happy life does not consist in clinging to a particular mood of happiness. Situations change so does happiness. Life itself is changing and ephemeral.

One of the best ways to get happiness is seeing children happy. Probably, a little smiles on their faces. A colourful painting too induces a sense happiness. It is my observation that learning to live with a smile is a road to happiness. It is inside you and try catching it and like a butterfly it flies away. Don’t disturb it if it comes and sits on your shoulder.

“People are often unreasonable and self-centered. Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.
If you are honest, people may cheat you. Be honest anyway.
If you find happiness, people may be jealous. Be happy anyway.
The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough. Give your best anyway.
For you see, in the end, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway ― Mother Teresa
