COMPETENCY MAPPING: REDESIGNING YOUR FUTURE

Competency mapping, a very popular word used at present in corporate world, is a process through which one assesses and determines one’s strengths as an individual worker and in some cases, as part of an organization. It generally examines two areas: emotional intelligence or emotional quotient (EQ), and strengths of the individual in areas like team structure, leadership, and decision-making etc…

Competent, Competency and Core competency are the three different terms. Competency can be defined as a standardized requirement for an individual to perform properly a specific job. It encompasses a combination of knowledge, skills, and behaviour utilised to improve performance. More generally, competency is the state or quality of being adequately or well qualified, having the ability to perform a specific role. A competency is an area of knowledge or a skill that is crucial for producing outstanding outputs.

Former General Electric CEO Jack Welch says, “If you do not have competitive advantages then do not compete.”

I firmly believe that you should know your core competency first. Time Management mathematics has to be followed for 8 hours a day to encash core competency. My humble suggestion is to you is follow this and see that you will grow by minimum 100 percent in a year.

Now, let us take another term core competency. Core competency is the important term. It should be distinguished from the common term competency. Core competency is a key to organizational resource that may be exploited to gain competitive advantage and is directly related to organisational aspects. Core competency is the key aspect of them competitively of an organisation as well as individuals and creates a sustainable competitive advantage for a firm in the market environment (Roth well, Lindoolm, 1999). According to Hamel and Prahalad (1990) and Mascarenhasetal (1998): Core competency represents the firm’s specific activity and can include product development, different technical matters, the firm’s reliable processes, know-how or relationships between the firm and its surroundings. Core competency is closely related to technical or product approaches. It should meet the following three criteria:

– Provide customer benefits

– Be hard for competitors to imitate

– Be leveraged widely to many products and markets

In modern firms activities that are not part of a company’s core competency are usually outsourced.

Prepare ‘Master blueprint’ is what a company must be doing today if it is to occupy the competitive high ground of tomorrow. By showing that the key to future industry leadership is to develop an independent point of view about tomorrow’s opportunities and build capabilities that exploit them.

Competency mapping also requires some thought, time, and analysis, and some people simply may not want to do the work involved to sufficiently map competencies.

Few of the questions which I came across are…

How is it useful in the process of Job analysis and job design?

Limitations of competency mapping if any…. What is the procedure or the method to do the competency mapping?

What are all the objectives of the competency mapping study?

How can the emotional intelligence of a person be increased?
